Update on Merryfield Park Project

The board inquired the city about the status of Merryfield Park and the paths, and received a response from Dustin Schull, the Parks Supervisor:

Why did the City terrace and gravel the hillside behind the playground?
There were several safety issues with city employees mowing the steep hillside. Terracing and installing a gravel path alleviates this issue and also allows a large vacuum truck to safely access the storm drain
located in the back portion of the park.

Why was a new trail constructed from the playground to a tree?
With equipment and gravel supplies already onsite, the City saw a unique, low cost opportunity to construct a small gravel trail for the public to access the State of Oregon Heritage Tree. The Douglas fir tree received Heritage Tree designation in 2014 with a plaque located at the base of the tree. Until now, the public was unable to access the site and enjoy the piece of Wilsonville history. The tree, while located on the hillside, is owned by the City and included in Merryfield Park.

When will the asphalt path be repaired?
Currently, the City is working with a contractor to repair the damaged sections of the asphalt path. These repairs are expected to be completed by end of November or early December. However, much of
this work is weather dependent.

Will the chain link fence adjacent to the path be fixed?
The fence will be repaired after the asphalt path repairs are completed. Due to shortage of fence contractors, it may take 6-8 weeks before final repairs can be made. The fence will remain open as a critical component to erosion control until the asphalt is completed.

The grass adjacent to the path entrance at Camelot Street was removed. Will the grass be replaced?
The grass was removed to provide park access for construction vehicles. Upon completion of the project, bark dust will be installed adjacent to the path. This will provide an appropriate surface for maintenance vehicles to access the park without damaging vegetation.

When will the entire project be completed?
Weather permitting, the project should be completed by end of November or early December.
